TechConnect Magazine - Google working on new image search technology
With image search on the rise, Google's wizards have been given the unholy task of making some new formula that would enhance search queries. The result is currently a prototype technology called VisualRank and is said to become as popular as the PageRank software which is used with web page searches. VisualRank leaves texts to rest and makes use of image recognition technologies in order to find the appropriate files and rank them accordingly.
"We wanted to incorporate all of the stuff that is happening in computer vision and put it in a Web framework," said Shumeet Baluja, one of Google's many researchers. "The company’s expertise in creating vast graphs that weigh 'nodes,' or Web pages, based on their 'authority, can be applied to images that are the most representative of a particular query."
Currently, the VisualRank tech is still being worked on as it needs a lot of tweaking before becoming something that would actually be used successfully on a large scale. Some are saying that it can't be done, but it's not over until the chubby IT company sings.
