Exclamation IE7 vs FIREFOX 2.0 - 12-28-2006, 04:46 PM

IE7 vs FIREFOX 2.0

TABBED BROWSING
Result: Firefox wins
Both browsers' tabs operate in a virtually identical manner although Firefox is the easy winner. it restores tabs after a crash and should you close a tab by mistake you can just press CTRL+Shift+T to reopen it again. IE does have the handy Quick tabs feature, but its possible to add this to Firefox via a simple extension

BOOKMARKS
Result: IE7 wins
Mozilla planned a combined bookmarks & history feature called Places for Firefox 2.0 but this should now appear on its third version. So, with its nicely redesigned favorites center, IE7 easily nudges its way of Firefox's standard bookmarks manager.

PHISHING PROTECTION
Result: IE7 wins
IE7 compares addresses of any sites you visit with legitimate addresses held by Microsoft & looks for phishing charcterisitcs. Firefox also uses a list and gives you an opprtunity to check pages with Google but IE7 catches more suspect sites out.

SEARCHING
Result: Firefox wins
Like IE&, Firefox's search system can discover new search engines and adding them is just as easy. However, Firefox has Google as its default (with other engines such as Yahoo pre-installed) and the search box brings up suggested search topics as you type. A clear winner.

RSS FEEDS
Result: A draw
This one comes down to personnel preference. While IE7 handles feeds superbly, Firefox's live bookmarks approach isn't as neat (although its been improved in the new version). however, Firefox also lets you subscribe to feeds using any third-party reader.

SECURITY
Result: Firefox wins
IE7 is a massive improvement over the leaky boat that was IE6. The new security features added by MS make it safer, and level the playing field. However, its too early to pronounce IE& secure and its high-profile nature means it remains a target for hackers and malware writers keen to find (and exploit) any lurking vulnerabilities.

WINNER: FIREFOX
So despite the fanfare for the release of IE&, I still think Firefox is better in key categories like security, searching & tabbed browsing. Don't let your familiarity with IE deter you from trying Firefox. However, in terms of innovative features, IE7 has closed the gap On Firefox, which is why it reigns in phishing and bookmarks category.

Please state why you like the browser of your choice too.

I like Firefox's spell check feature. It's like a word processor inside your browser!

I prefer firefox to hell, IE7 has changed the UI too much, and it just feels weird to use - it would take alot of getting used to for me to use it comfortably. I like Firefox2 because it takes the User Interface of Firefox and IE that I'm used to, and adds improvements, rather than like IE7, drastically changing the interface. That said, changes have to come at times, and I suppose I have to accept it...

Agree. Firefox is very convenient to use. It has many features and modules that we can choose as well - and there's a good community out there willing to support this software. Way better than IE.

I prefer Firefox. Better standards compliance, spell check, easily customizable, and better security. Less resource intensive also. And can you get IE7 for Linux or OSX? I didn't think so. The crossplatformness of Firefox allows me to have exactly the same browsing experience across multiple systems.

Opera is the best. Firefox and IE fail the Acid2 browser test whereas Opera does not
