Why should we get an appraisal?

Why do we need appraisals for domain names? Does it tell us how much we can ask when trying to sell a domain name? Does the domain name need to be registered or should we have it registered before we can get an appraisal?

Your domain must be registered by yourself. An appraisal will tell you the approximate value you will get if you sell the domain.

domain appraisal is a re-educatin regarding what commerce you can build with your names.

You might have developed other sites for different reasons but it's a reminder to keep your eyes open to new possibilities.

i have never done a professional appraisal before.

Basically, appraisals hold as much as a paper boat.
Domains are priced at a price the customer is willing to pay for them. Most of the time, companies appraise a domain which represents ideality rather than reality. If it is short and concise then it is worth a few bob.

No, the appraisal is just an indication of the potential value. You will get whatever buyers are willing to pay, and that may be more or less than the appraisal.

Who does the appraisals? Also, do you pay for them to be done?

If your domain has been appraised at a high value from a trusted organization, you have better leverage when negotiating a price.

Let's say your name has been appriased at $10,000. You now have good chances to negotiate a price of $1,000 or maybe $2,000. If your domain however has been appraised at $20 only, you will unlikely get more than that.

So it is a sales tool, not a 100% accurate value estimator.
