normally, for most smaller hosting business that provides free domain, they are trying to tie u down by the "free domain" .

try transferring and u will understand .

Sounds like they are doing some wishful thinking, hoping you won't need the domain forever.

its not a free domain as it is clearly supported by a hosting, i.e. buy hosting first.
