I don't know, but I think it's to help the domain being transferred to another nameserver

If you have a domain that you aren't doing anything with (haven't developed yet), parking it is a good way to earn money off of it.

what registrars actually give you any money though? most that I know of park it, but don't give you any money if people click links!

Most parking companies pay out much better than registrars. If you have a significant number of domains that you aren't using I'd advise starting an account with a parking company.
