Domain dropping - 02-09-2006, 05:20 PM

What exactly does the term domains dropping mean? Does that mean the name is being dropped and can be used by someone else?

technically yes. But many very good names drop.

They will expire if the owner abandons it or sets it up for sale.

But there will be a fight for it. Recognising this, the auction companies have put up sites where you can bid on the expiring name and "settle" the winner before it even become available. That way the best price comes to the owner or registrar that has it.

What a great idea! So, before it expires, the owner must renew is that correct? I wonder how far in advance you can renew, to ensure you do not lose it.

You can renew at any time. Most registrars also allow you to set auto-renew, so as long as they have valid payment information for you, the domain will automatically be renewed for you

In Australia, we can only register a .com.au domain for a max of 2 years at a time and then renew it for another two years. Prices over here for domains are absurd though! it can cost up to $70-80 for a .com.au domain with the small known companies and like 150$ with the most well known!

I thought the costliest domains were .com/.net, but ive been reading about a lot of localized domains going for anything above $50!

LOL That's what I was wondering kk_00. I was expecting to see a list. But I did learn something...never knew about this whole renewing and dropping of the domain name culture. Interesting.
