How long is too long? - 02-19-2006, 07:39 PM

Well it seems the conventional wisdom has changed a little. It used to be anything over 14 letters was doom, too long to type and too prone to mispelling and creating type in traffic for someone else. But maybe if it is the perfect name and just happens to be too long it still might work.

But the value must be low, right? Opinions?

14 characters is a bit long for a top level domain, but for a subdomain it's ok. I usually just use my google toolbar anyway, just in case I get the domain wrong.

This depends. Usually you never want more than a one-word, two word, or 3 short words. But I have certain domains that are very high searched generic keywords that do well in PPC.

I actually like some of these names, such as phpWebApplications.com, phpWebSiteThemes.com, FlashWebDesignTemplates.com... but they are intended more for directing traffic than branding or building any kind of a site around.

I also have been having fun registering a few phrases. This is still an experiment, but as BeamMeUpScotty.com is gone, and many such phrases like that, i have registered a few like HonorableIntentions.com, NoIntelligentLifeOnEarth.com & ShootOutAtTheOKCorral.com. Believe it or not, these domains seem to have traffic. Not alot, but a little more than I expected. Now I just have to figure out how to get people clicking on the PPC Ads they show.

Domainer that's funny because I think you might be onto something. As the keyword market gets saturated maybe the next big thing is the "saying" market. I can see how that would get occasional typo in traffic.

Actually, Fabulous has a nice presentation about how longer generic search keyword phrases are doing better all the time.

Unfortunately, they moved the presentation, so I don't have the link anymore.

But really, any logical search term will do. Check Overture's keyword search tool for how often it gets searched, but remember that Overture will re-organize phrases, drop plurals, etc., so you need to use some common sense in the wording and tense. Another good place to look for keyword names is WordTracker.

Here are a few links to good tools to use for finding these types of names:

Yeah, 14 letters is a BIT long... I like to go with 9 or 10 letters, or maybe less.

i think 15 characters is already long, not to mention 15 words.
let me see in my domain collection i have the shortest is 3 character .org and about 3 4-letter .com
