hosting yourself - 04-01-2006, 07:08 PM

Does anyone here host themselves? Our Mac G5 is a server in itself, so we are currently hosting our website off of that. I didn't do any of the backend work, my fiance did. I do know that it took a lot of work, trial and error, and patience because we had no idea what we were doing. Overall, it's ended up being a pretty decent experience... no need to pay hosting fees

Some things to consider:
- Do you have enough incoming and outgoing bandwidth?
- Do you do daily backups?
- Do you keep the latest patches on your server?
- Do you have redundant power supply in case of power failure?
- Do you have network connectivity failover in place?
- Do you have a decent firewall?

What I am trying to say: If you host a family picture album or something similar, you should be ok. If you host anything more serious such as a business venture, you may want to look into paid hosting that does all of the above.

nope, there are so many considerations also the uptime is. i can't guarantee an uptime for my customers if I do that, that's why i have my own dedicated server.

Oh yeah, we are only hosting ourselves. A personal weblog/photo gallery for our friends and family back in our home state so that they can keep up with what is going on in our lives. I wouldn't trust it enough to host anybody else, at least not paying customers.

It's probably slow too since it's sharing your internet connection

Actually, it's pretty fast... in our case, anyway. We haven't had a single problem with the speed of the pages loading and it hasn't given the computer any problems. It's not Windows, you see

I host myself at my own companys website. I really like this option because I get to monitor everything and if I should ever run out of bandwidth or space I can just go to WHM and increase it.
But a downfall of this is, if you can't keep your server online all the time, then your site wont be on all the time. Its better to buy a server at a different location and leave it there, tell them to run it there. ONe bad mistake I made. And I regret making it.
