Microsoft Domain Name - 05-22-2007, 04:22 AM

I have a domain name from ddBoard of The "Using Windows Site - Getting The Most Out Of Windows. Is that against Microsoft's trademark laws? I have searched and have not found anything. I do not want to get in trouble for this later when I have a lot of users, so I am asking now. I do not sell any products on my web site. Thank you.

You can always ask M$FT, but I'm not sure what the ramifications of doing that would be...

Microsoft can't trademark the word Windows, otherwise what can you call those little pieces of glass that fill those holes in your walls?

(ps. plenty of sites use it anyway, take windowsxlive.net as an example)

Just to be safe, I have sent an e-mail to the Trademark department. I am awaiting a response. Thanks to all for replying.

There is no way to have a patent to a word which is in normal dictionary

Some of you clearly need to learn a little more about trademarks. At least two
of you made inaccurate posts that can potentially and dangerously lull people
into a false sense of security.

Apple is generic for the fruit. But it's also a trademark for computer products.

Tide is generic for the waves. But it's a brand of detergent.

A dictionary defines a word in its generic sense. But it doesn't dicate what is
and what isn't a trademark.

One of Merriam Webster's definitions of a window is an opening. But go check
that or any dictionary and see if windows is generic for a brand of software.

It might interest some of you to know that Microsoft has filed suits against a
large number of registrants whose domain names are potentially infringing their
trademarks, especially those they'll be able to prove are doing so. Apparently
they're trying to send a message that goes like, "Here's what'll happen if you
infringe our rights."

Some of you ought to think long and hard before posting next time. There's a
lot of junk on the 'net, there's no need to add to it.

It's fine, places like www.thevistageeks.com and Windows Vista Forums use it
