Copyrighting

I'm rather new to the whole legal system

However, I have my own rapidly expanding site which I would not like to see ripped at all.

There are a few sites I've seen that say "Copyright © 2001-2006 Yada Yada"
What is the process involved into getting your site "Copyrighted", and if people do rip content, is it worth sueing (sp?) them?

Good question.

Most people just put copyright text so scare plagiarists. Can someone explain?

Well, IANAL, but if you are the creator of an original design or original artwork, that is automatically under copyright and you don't particularly need that © sign, atleast under US copyright.

I suppose you get more power to sue people if you copyright/patent/register something.
