Is this illegal or what? - 12-18-2006, 04:18 PM

If you are running a game server of some sort, is it illegal to kick it (shut it down) and ping it (slow someones internet down by a great speed)?

I need to know if this is illegal or not. If it is illegal, I'm taking further actions.

My guess is that it would be destruction of other peoples property or along the lines of hacking in some way (not directly hacking though).

Thanks.

I think it's not illegal but moderation maybe in terms of pinging someone.

I was watching a documentary about spam actually and one thing that stuck in my head was the fact that if a group of computers work together for the intent of shutting down someone's web site, then that's regarded as criminal activity.

Your case seems to present a similar situation in which the hacker is trying to shutdown or destroy your game server for the purpose of destruction. Now I don't fully know the extent of US Law, but it would certainly be interesting researching this further as you may have just been a victim of a criminal act.

I hope this small insight can help you to put the hackers to justice who have caused this mess for you. I wish I could do more, but unfortunately I'm no expert of law, particularly when it comes to something which is usually outside of my knowledge.

IANAL, but if you keep getting repeated requests from one ip or ip range and they do not seem to be doing anything useful except using up the bandwidth, that's Denial of Service and is not allowed.

Still, why not just ban that ip or ip-range?
