I was on another forum and saw a few people saying they were going to bid on an expiring domain name? What is this? Is this the same as backordering?

no. the drop lists are online services where expiring domain names are auctioned off to the highest bidder before expiration.This is usually done on behalf of the domain name owner.

You bid and the highest bidder per name gets the name when it "drops", expires.

Why would you want a domain name that someone else had? I do not understand.

A previously owned domain probably has a lot of links pointing to it. This means there will be traffic, which you can turn into money.

Example: Imagine the domain google.com was dropping. Wouldn't you want to register it for you? You will get millions of hits and this means $$$.
