Yes, you can do whatever you want with it. You need to know however that domain registrations are valid for a certain amount of time only, usually 1 to 10 years. You will need to renew your registration within that period.

it's like British leasehold system. You are renting it for a year. It still is governed by Icann, and when the year is up, you pay again or it goes free. You can multiple year buy ahead, but I am not sure yet if they have a way for you to buy them for forever?

No, you cannot buy it forever... Maximum is 10 years.

I guess you are right. You are not really buying it like you buy a house. You are buying ownership for a number of years. Maybe that is called renting... You get the idea.
