Should I purchase all of them? -
02-15-2006, 10:01 PM
When I recently bought my .com domain, it was suggested I purchase the .net and .biz versions as well. Is it really necessary. I'm sure if you were Pepsi or Doritos you would want to, but in all likelihood, my domain name won't become a household name. I am just wondering if I made a mistake not purchasing the other versions.

If it is business related and you want to protect your name, it is worth the investment. If it is personal or you are a very small business, it may not be necessary.

It really depends upon how big are you as a firm.
Textpattern has all the 3 main tlds: com, net and org
and each has some different contents.
If you think you really need to squat on other tlds or you have bigger ideas, you may as well go ahead

I wouldn't bother with the more obscure tlds, but I would consider it for the .org, .com and .net. Of course it all depends on the business. I like the suggestion that if you are giving out the URL by name, to do it. However, most people almost always check .coms first, so if you forgo it you are probably still in good shape.

I think I have decided against purchasing the others. The site is going to be a professional URL for me, a freelancer. I probably won't be handing it out by word of mouth, but mostly by links provided in resumes and blogs, on forums, etc. I appreciate all the thoughtful replies!
