Ad Space? - 02-20-2006, 11:05 AM

I may be opening a "general" forum soon. I was just wondering if I should offer ad space to pay for the costs of running it.

Ad space will be around $10 a week. And there will be 2 ad spaces advalible.

Does that sound like a good idea?

I would try to get the forum running before offering ad space. You can then provide statistics to potential advertisers, such as visitors per day, total visitors, post per day, etc.

Also, since your forum is of a general nature, advertisers may be skeptical as it will be difficult to target the right audience. For example, a forum on dogs attracts dog food or dog toys advertisers. A forum on hosting attracts hosting advertisers.

What kind of advertiser will your forum attract?

Well I was thinking about making it a paid to post forum. Where the members get paid say like 4 cents a post. That'll mean they'll also probally be interested in "Get Paid To" sites.

So probally any Get Paid To sites.

How are you going to handle the logistics of paying people and calculating their payments. Are you going to be moderating the forum?

I guess he can moderate the forum himself. Its not all that hard to by the way.

Even if he needs to have other moderators he can. They will do it just for the honor.

I would use Google instead of trying to sell ad space right away. I think it's also a good idea to have a number of frequent visitors before counting on earning money from ad space. If you use AdSense, relevant ads will come up. Such as those about making money I guess, if that's what is talked about in the forums.

What did you end up deciding to do, Comet? Were you able to successfully begin a paid to post forum? I was wondering if anyone's ideas here were helpful to you.
