How exactly do you approach someone

How exactly do you approach someone for a link exchange? Have you ever been turned down for one?

if you think they may be interested
just email them, or talk to them in a live chat
then ask them if they are interested in a link exchange?
if they are, give them a few stats and voila
very few people turn down link exchanges, unless they wouldn't want to link to a site like yours, with certain content in it

I haven't approached for a link exchange before, but I've found that often when I use someone's link, they notice the extra traffic to their site. In return they usually put a link to my site on theirs. I would definitely stick to trading links with those with similar content...

Begging? What a crock! If you want ppl to submit to your dir, just say so.. dir's are great, if they aren't to watered down. Private bk links are better, any link that doesnt require a recip. is fabulous, if the recip is required, and you need the links, throw up a links page and add em :P .. you can always end the exchange agreement later.

usually i go where the people are on the internet and that is mostly on forums so i go there and participate and contribute whenever I can and provide my links on sigs.

Usually I only entertain those emails where I know that the webmaster has really visited my site (commented on specific details on my site). And if it's been sent only to me. If it's an email sent to thousand webmasters, it'll go straight to my trash bin.
