AEF - Advanced Electron Forum is relatively new forum script on the market but it looks good and it is free. =)
It is written in PHP and MySQL...

Few features:
  • WYSIWYG Editors
  • JS DOCK for easy navigation
  • Customizable Themes
  • News System with articles
  • ShoutBox
  • Suggest Framework
  • Threaded Mode for topics
  • Domdrag for reordering Categories, Forums, emoticons

the demo looks good. But I will have to try it before I can give a review. But I don't think it can beat SMF.
The big minus is the lack of themes. Curently there are NO THEMES for it.
If I have time I will download and instal it on my home PC just to see how it is.

I still think vBulletin and Invision Power Board is better. It lacks the quality that you find in these two major ones.

Anyways, it's good for a free forum software.
